Materials innovations in fashion industry is a fundamental aspect to stand out from the rest. This is the case of three sneakers brands; Civic Duty, Unstitched Utilities y The UT.LAB made from Tyvek. This is a material developed by Dupont that seems like paper because is printable o it could be lamited but in fact it is made of polymers and is able to be recycled. This material is widely used in farmaceutical industry, in envelopes, car covers and security apparel as well since it is very resistant, light and repels water. This sneakers could be recycled easily later on and converted in other products.

De la misma serie del documental “The Next Black”, les recomendamos la entrevista completa con Suzanne Lee directora de Biocuture. Una interesantísima charla sobre el futuro de la moda y los textiles a través de organismos vivos.  La colaboración entre ciencia y moda es crosfuncional y por supuesto plantea la idea de “sustentabilidad” en la moda al no tener desperdicios de materiales. Muy recomendable, una ventana al futuro de lo que podríamos estar usando en unas décadas. Las imagenes de su laboratorio son también muy interesantes. A ver interesting talk  about the future of clothing and textiles through living organisms. Terms like “growing a dress”  Collaboration between science and fashion is cros-functional and of course lays out the idea of “sustainability” in fashion not having materials waste. textile pattern of the week // BANANA LEAF TREND

Estos son de mis patterns favoritos, después de haber visto el trend de “palms” en prints. Son patterns verdes, naturales, frescos, grandes y muy selváticos.

Esta textura ahora hace relevo al palm print con las hojas de plátano o banana leaves. El trend ha bajado a productos de apparel también como accesorios, zapatos y algunas prendas pero sobre todo las he visto en decoración de interiores como wallpapers de paredes o incluso habitaciones enteras y el pattern es amplificado, grande. En los baños también es muy usado aplicado en las paredes. Una gran textura que añade un toque exótico y fresco a cualquier habitación o outfit.

This is one of my favorite patterns after being seeing the palm leaf trend. They are green, natural, fresh and exhuberant jungle.

This texture now makes way to banana leaves. This pattern trend has being well spread across apparel, accesories, footwear but mainly I have saw it in home decor like wallpapers, tapestry and entire rooms. It is also very used in bathrooms walls. A great texture that adds an exotic and fresh touch to any room or outfit.

Históricamente siempre hemos visto que son las mujeres las encargadas de los tejidos y textiles en la mayoría de las culturas del mundo. Los textiles son un símbolo de los hilos y tejidos de la vida, la genera, dá forma y sostiene la vida. Sin embargo hay hombres en diversas culturas también involucrados en crear textiles, principalmente en el proceso de teñido y cestería pero también en el tejido.

Eliza Bennett – Artist

Eliza Bennett, una artista textil, de Inglaterra, de la cual su obra está dentro de mi catálogo de “subversive textiles”, piezas hechas con fibras inquietantes y rebeldes. Sólo basta ver estas fotografías para establecer un contacto directo y dialogar con su obra “A Woman´s Work is Never Done”. 

A series of photographic works titled ‘A Woman’s Work is Never Done’ Using my own hand as a base material, I considered it a canvas upon which I stitched into the top layer of skin using thread to create the appearance of an incredibly work worn hand.  By using the technique of embroidery, which is traditionally employed to represent femininity and applying it to the expression of its opposite, I hope to challenge the pre-conceived notion that ‘women’s work’ is light and easy.  Aiming to represent the effects of hard work arising from employment in low paid ‘ancillary’ jobs, such as cleaning, caring and catering, all traditionally considered to be ‘women’s work’. 

The technique, I recall first applying to my hand under a table during a home economics class in school. I was totally amazed to find that I could pass a needle under the top layers of skin without any pain, only a mild discomfort.  As with many childhood whims it passed and I hadn’t thought any more about it until quite recently when I decided to apply the process to my hand to make it appear calloused and work worn like that of a manual labourer. Some viewers consider the piece to be a feminist protest, for me it’s about human value. After all, there are many men employed in caring, catering, cleaning etc… all jobs traditionally considered to be ‘women’s work’. Such work is invisible in the larger society, with ‘A woman’s work’ I aim to represent it.
